Edmund S. Evangelista, MD is triple board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, and Pain Medicine.  His practice focuses on the nonsurgical management of spine, sports, and general orthopedic disorders.  He has over 22 years of clinical experience and has worked with one of the top orthopedic groups in South Orange County for over 20 years.  He has extensive experience with advanced image-guided injection techniques, using fluoroscopy (X-ray) or ultrasound for accurate placement of spine, joint, and soft tissue injection treatments.

Dr. Evangelista has a special interest and extensive training in Regenerative Medicine (using the body’s own cells to stimulate the healing and repair of injured tissues).  He believes these treatments have tremendous potential for treating a variety of orthopedic and pain conditions.  “I’ve been using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for over 10 years, and it has truly been a ‘game-changer’ in my practice. Many orthopedic injuries often don’t respond to traditional treatments, such as physical therapy and cortisone shots.  PRP has helped many of my patients return to their active lifestyles without the need for surgery.  I’ve had PRP in my own shoulder rotator cuff tear and am back to surfing 100% pain-free.” –Dr. Evangelista

Dr. Evangelista earned his Bachelor’s degree from Boston College in 1992 where he graduated with honors and was a member of the Varsity Ski Team for 4 years.  He received his M.D. from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1996, and then completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of California Irvine in 2000 where he was awarded “Outstanding Graduating Resident of the Year”.  He then completed a one-year Orthopedic Spine and Sports Fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City where he received specialty training in nonsurgical spine and orthopedic care, interventional pain management, and sports medicine.

Dr. Evangelista has volunteered his time with Disabled Sports USA-Orange County where he served as Medical Advisor, as well as a volunteer ski instructor for the disabled for over 17 years.  He also served as team physician for Tesoro High School in Mission Viejo for 12 years. Dr. Evangelista has given educational lectures to residents and physicians on shoulder disorders, and he is the author of “Shoulder Injuries” in Sports Injuries Guidebook (2nd edition published 2019).

As a result of his expertise and dedication to patient care, Dr. Evangelista was selected as a Castle Connolly “Top Doctor” in Orange County/Southern California for over 10 consecutive years.  He was also selected as a “Physician of Excellence” by Orange County Medical Association (featured in Orange County Magazine) in 2019, 2020, and 2022.

To further pursue his passion in the field of Regenerative Medicine, Dr. Evangelista is excited to join the team at San Diego Orthobiologics Medical Group in January 2023, where he will be able to provide the most advanced, cutting-edge orthobiologic treatments available.  He looks forward to collaborating with like-minded expert physicians at SDOMG with the goal of helping his patients achieve a pain-free active lifestyle.

In his free time, Dr. Evangelista is an avid surfer and also enjoys skiing, snowboarding, traveling, and spending time with his wife and 2 children.
